Kristina Knight 唐林懿
Coach, linguist, crafter, mother, cheerleader-I offer the support, encouragement and tools learners need to love Mandarin.
My favorite part of a lesson is when a student gets that “Oh, I get it!” look in her eyes. It’s even better when he's a young child who not only exclaims but claps and jumps up and down. I get it!
After having lived in France as an exchange student and studied Hungarian in high school, my mom encouraged me to study Chinese in college. By my senior year there were only five of us taking Chinese. I studies and worked in four Chinese cities and traveled extensively, talking to many strangers who became friends. I completed my undergraduate studies in East Asian Studies at Oberlin College, and later obtained an MA in Chinese Literature at the University of Hawaii. I have taught Japanese, French, Mandarin and English as a Foreign Language for nearly 20 years. In addition, I have worked in international trade, shipping, and non-profits. Teaching puts my talents to their best use and makes me feel most fulfilled.
The environment is important to me, so I avoid using disposable utensils, cups and plates. Using nice chopsticks helps kids experience part of Chinese culture. I use found and recycled materials such as paper tubes, corks, and styrofoam trays in projects.
I am a communicative, flexible teacher. I amend lessons throughout a session to accommodate the group dynamic and individual abilities. In addition to the material covered in class, this might include an audio file, how to make an abacus from bamboo skewers and beads, or a link to a popular Chinese song.
I will always welcome you!
